Veterans services offered in Amarillo, TX

Many veterans have health problems that require regular care. At I40First, primary care providers Julito Uy, MD, George Peterson, DNP, FNP-C, and the team proudly participate in the Department of US Veterans Affairs community care program. This distinction allows them to treat veterans outside of a VA setting who are experiencing non-life-threatening or non-limb-threatening conditions that require immediate intervention. To make an appointment, call the office in Amarillo, Texas, today or book online.

What is the veterans’ community care program?

The veterans’ community care program is an initiative developed by the Department of US Veterans Affairs. It allows eligible veterans to receive health care from a primary care physician when the VA can’t provide the same treatment.

Once you enroll in the program, the VA coordinates treatment with the team at I40First and covers the costs of your care.

Who qualifies for the veterans’ community care program?

To enroll in the Department of Veterans Affairs community care program, you must first receive approval from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. To do that, you need to meet one of the six eligibility requirements listed below:

  • You need medical services that aren’t available at a VA facility
  • You live in an area without a full-service VA medical facility
  • You qualify under the “grandfather” provision for distance eligibility
  • Community care is in the interest of your health and well-being
  • The VA service line doesn’t meet certain quality standards

You might also qualify for the veterans’ community care program if the VA can’t schedule an appointment within the average driving time or waiting time standards.

What services does the veterans’ community care program provide?

At I40First, the team offers a variety of health care services through the veterans’ community care program, including:

  • Physical exams

  • Stitches and sutures
  • Referrals to medical specialists
  • Urgent care
  • Immunizations

The only health problems that the team can’t treat through the veterans’ community care program are life-threatening and limb-threatening conditions.
